What is Ayurveda
Ayurveda is a combination of science and philosphy. The practice of Ayurveda healing is divided into different branches including, massage, music therapy, breathing exercises and more. This ancient healing philosophy was said to have been handed down by Lord Brahma (the creator of the universe according to Hindu mythology. These books were called Vedas (veda meaning science). There are 4 vedas, one of which dates back to 3000 BC.
Theory Ayurvedic theory is based on the constitution of the individual which dictates the susceptibility of the person to certain diseases. Although it is very ancient, Ayurveda has changed dramatically with the times. Many modern conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome and chronic fatigue syndrome have been successfully treated. Ayurveda uses energy points, pulse diagnosis and herbal remedies.
Ayurveda Branches
There are eight branches in the practice of Ayurvedic medicine. Practioners are well trained in the principles of nutrition, psychology, herbalism and in many cases, gem therapy and astrology as well. Believe it or not this system of medicine, includes general and plastic surgery, geriatrics, internal medicine, toxicology, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, ear, nose and throat and rejuvination therapy..
Ayurveda includes Hygiene Practices
Although the physical hygiene part of Ayurveda is not widely discussed, use of the Neti pot to cleanse nasal passages (known as nasal irrigation) is an ancient practice that originated in India. Many forms of holistic medicines including Ayurveda focuses some attention on dietary consumption. The main goal being to eliminate toxicity. Generally you are told to eliminate tobacco, excessive alcohol consumption and of course, drugs.
